Safe Startup Procedures

Before starting an industrial cooler, verify that the power supply is normal and safely grounded. Check the electrical wiring for any damage and ensure all connections are secure. Open the main power switch in the distribution room and close the cooler circuit breaker to bring the system to a runnable state. Set the control temperature on the main controller and configure the over-temperature alarm on the alarm display. Start the cooler using the start button on the control panel and verify that it operates normally before leaving it unattended.

Exhaust and Pressure Management

Proper exhaust management is critical for cooler safety and efficiency. Ensure that all air vents are unobstructed and functioning properly. Monitor pressure gauges regularly during operation to ensure that pressures remain within the specified operating range. If the cooler automatically shuts down due to an over-temperature alarm, wait at least 3 minutes for the internal temperature to decrease before pressing the reset button and restarting the equipment. Never attempt to override safety shutdowns or restart the cooler immediately after a trip.

Regular Inspection Schedule

Perform daily visual inspections checking for unusual noise, vibration, or leaks. Weekly inspections should include checking all pipe connections for tightness and inspecting the cooling medium for contamination. Monthly inspections should cover electrical system integrity including wiring connections, contact resistance, and insulation condition. Quarterly inspections should include comprehensive testing of all safety devices and control systems. Annual inspections should involve complete cooler disassembly and thorough cleaning of all components.

Safety Valve Testing and Maintenance

Test safety relief valves at least quarterly to verify they open at the rated pressure. For coolers operating at elevated pressures, more frequent testing may be required. If a safety valve fails to open at the set pressure or fails to reseat properly after opening, it must be replaced immediately. Never plug or bypass a safety relief valve as this creates a serious explosion hazard. Maintain a log of all safety valve tests including the set pressure, actual opening pressure, and the condition of the valve.

Maintenance Record Keeping and Best Practices

Keep detailed maintenance records for each cooler unit including installation date, all inspection dates and findings, cleaning dates and methods, component replacements, and all safety device test results. These records are invaluable for identifying recurring problems, predicting when maintenance will be needed, and providing documentation for regulatory compliance. When shutting down a cooler for extended periods, drain all cooling water, clean the unit thoroughly, and apply protective coatings to prevent corrosion during the idle period.
