Optimizing Laser Cutting Parameters for Different Materials
How to set optimal laser power, speed, gas pressure and focus for various materials.
Laser parameter optimization maximizes speed while maintaining quality. Power determines maximum thickness with 6kW cutting 6mm steel at 3m/min and 12kW achieving 6m/min.
Speed must balance with power. Too fast leaves uncut sections while too slow wastes time and increases heat-affected zones. Optimal speed produces slight drag line patterns on edges.
Oxygen at 0.5 to 2 bar provides exothermic energy for mild steel up to 25mm. Nitrogen at 10 to 20 bar ejects material for oxide-free stainless and aluminum cuts. Compressed air offers economical thin sheet alternatives.
Surface focus gives narrowest kerf for thin materials. Below-surface focus helps slag evacuation in thick plates. Above-surface focus creates wider piercing zones.
